2013 Breeders Cup Classic Preview: Game On Dude the Favorite at Santa Anita

2013 Breeders Cup Classic Preview: Game On Dude the Favorite at Santa Anita

The starters are complete, the post positions are drawn and the odds are set. All that’s left is the race itself.

The 2013 Breeders’ Cup World Championships is set for its 30th running this weekend, November 1-2 at Santa Anita Park, California. Over $25 million are up for grabs over the two-day event, $5 million of which will be at stake at the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the richest race in North America.

2013 Breeders Cup Classic Preview

Twelve of the finest Thoroughbreds in the world will vie for one of horseracing’s top prizes, and we look at each one’s odds of victory:

The Favorites

Game On Dude is the odds on favorite to win this year’s Classic. Obviously, Topbet is a fan of the name (Game on!) but there are no biases here. Dude has seven wins in eight starts in Santa Anita and is even odds to continue his undefeated 2013 with a win at the Classic. But he was also hotly tipped to win the race last year, and the “Dude” was a dud. [sc:horses240banner ]

Should Game On Dude falter once again, several horses are keen to pounce, such as Mucho Macho Man. Mucho recently won the Awesome Again Stakes last September at Santa Anita, and last year’s Classic runner-up is +350 to do one better this year.

With an impressive winning percentage (7 wins in 12 career starts), including victory at Juddmonte International last August, Declaration of War is rightly placed as one of the favorites at +600. Similarly, Will Take Charge has won his last two races, including the Travers Stakes last August, and could be a good bet at +800.

A couple of champions are also in contention. Defending Classic champ Fort Larned has had an inconsistent 2013, which likely factored into his odds of +800 to win. Likewise, reigning Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice is +1000 to win after just two wins in nine starts this year.

The Rest of the Field

Among the longshots on the field, take a glance at Flat out and Moreno. Flat out is +1400 to win, but has finished in the top 3 in his last five races. Moreno, meanwhile, has cracked the top 3 eight times in 11 starts this year, including five places and is +2000 to get his third and biggest career win.

Rounding out the field are Ron the Greek (+1200), Paynter (+1800), Planteur (+2000), and Last Gunfighter (+2500).
