2017 Preakness Purse and Prize Money Breakdown

After winning the 2017 Kentucky Derby, and the 1st-place prize money of $1.24 million, Always Dreaming will now have his sights set on the second leg of the Triple Crown – the 2017 Preakness Stakes – and the biggest piece of the $1.5 million purse that’ll be on the line. Read on below for a more detailed breakdown of that pie.

PLACE PRIZE MONEY
1st $900,000
2nd $300,000
3rd $165,000
4th $90,000
5th $45,000
TOTAL $1,500,000

The Preakness’ purse isn’t quite as large as the Kentucky Derby’s $2 million in prize money, but $1.5 million is definitely nothing to sneeze at. Derby winner Always Dreaming is a -125 favorite to win the Preakness, and if he does, he’ll get to take home a cool $900,000.

The second-place horse will get $300,000, while third will win $165,000. Classic Empire – currently priced at +300 – is a possible candidate to land in either spot if he doesn’t end up winning. There will also be shares for the horses that finish fourth ($90,000) and fifth ($45,000), but that’s as far as the prize money will go.
