There is 1.5 million dollars to be divvied up this coming June 9th during the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes. That is a lot of money. Back in 1867, during the first edition of the now prestigious event, the total purse was only set at just a little over $2,000. The race has come a long way since then, with the money breakdown in the annual race netting all finishers with a hefty sum. The Belmont Stakes is the third and last leg of the Triple Crown. For some, it’s where Triple Crown dreams see fruition. To others, it’s where those same aspirations go to die. Justify’s camp is hoping that their horse will get it done this year after winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown at Churchill Downs and at Pimlico. It’s going to be easier said than done with the Belmont Stakes the longest race of the three. Some are convinced that fatigue is setting in for the young and undefeated (5-0) horse, but if Justify accomplishes the feat, not only will he enter the history books, he’ll also get his people a cool total of $900,000. Just like last year, the purse total for the 2018 Belmont Stakes is set at $1.5 million with the winner coming away with, as mentioned in the table above, 900 grand. The runner-up gets $300,000 while the third-placer will take home $165,000.
