2020 Belmont Stakes Purse and Prize Money Breakdown

The purse for the 2020 Belmont Stakes is significantly smaller than last year’s when the total prize was at $1.5 million. This year, the sum of the prizes is set at $1 million. We all have to make sacrifices this year though, right? This week (heading into June 20) the winner’s share has been revealed at a cool (considering) $535,000 USD. From there, we can determine the remaining breakdown. TopBet News staff has pulled out their collective calculators to apply previous years’ percentages to deliver the purse distribution for the runner-up down to the fifth-place horses in the race.

More Info

For the first time in history, the Belmont Stakes will be staged before its two other Triple Crown siblings, which are the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered the schedule of many sporting events, and the Triple Crown is no different. But the important thing is that all three races will be held this year. The past several years have been intriguing to say the least with regards to the winners at Belmont Stakes, as only three betting favorites in the past 15 years have managed to win this leg of the Triple Crown. However, the fact that the Belmont Stakes will be the first Triple Crown race of this year could make that trend a little harder to discern and interpret. Also called the “Test of Champions,” the Belmont Stakes usually hosts relatively fatigued horses, who raced in at least one of the other two legs of the Triple Crown. This time around, there would be no information to break down when it comes to the horses’ performance in a previous Triple Crown race. It’s anyone’s game folks…maybe.
