Naturally, the Breeders’ Cup Classic race has the largest share of the $28 million prize pool for the entire event. The Classic now has a total purse of $6 million up for grabs – a $1 million increase from 2015, making this year’s running of the race the richest to date.
Apart from the prize money to be won by the first- to eighth-place finishers of the Classic, eight percent of the $6 million purse ($480,000) will be distributed as “Travel Awards”. North-American starters that are based outside of California will be awarded $10,000, while starters outside of North America in general will be granted $40,000 apiece for making the trip to Santa Anita Park this week.
