On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Angels fell to the Oakland Athletics, 3-1, to be denied of a three-game series sweep in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n

The Angels remain half a game behind the final wild card spot in the AL, and they’ll need their offense to get it going again. Wednesday marked the first time in eight games that they failed to score at least six runs in a contest. In the seven games prior to the loss in Oakland, they went 5-2 against their division rivals after scoring an average of 8.4 runs during that stretch.<\/p>\n

Opposing teams are well aware of how good Los Angeles can be with their bats popping, that most of them continue to deny superstar Mike Trout putting the ball into play. Trout drew two walks in Wednesday’s loss, extending his franchise record of most consecutive walks to 14 games. At least first baseman C.J. Cron continues to deliver from his end, extending his own hit streak to 10 games.<\/p>\n

Taking the mound in Friday’s series opener in the Northwest is Ricky Nolasco (6-12, 5.08 ERA), who should fare well against the Mariners. Nolasco is 1-0 with a decent 4.07 ERA in four starts versus Seattle this season.<\/p>\n

The 5-3 defeat to the Houston Astros on Wednesday sent the Seattle Mariners three-and-a-half games behind the final AL wild card spot after gaining some ground in the race early on. A three-game sweep at the hands of the Astros goes to show that Seattle needs to be more consistent on both sides of the ball if the team truly aims to make the postseason.<\/p>\n

Then again, the Mariners’ standouts are still producing well. Robinson Cano knocked in his 10th hit and sixth RBI over the last five games, and Kyle Seager hit his third home run in as many games.<\/p>\n

Having Mike Leake\u00a0(8-12, 4.14 ERA) as Friday’s starter should get the M’s off on the right foot. Leake was acquired last week from St. Louis and threw for over seven innings of two-run ball in his first start for his new team. However, the 29-year-old righty has also given up seven hits apiece to Angels batters Justin Upton, Luis Valbuena and Andrelton Simmons \u2013 each in less than 20 at-bats\u00a0\u2013 throughout his career.<\/p>\n

Making matters worse for the Mariners is that the Angels have had their number of late, as they just suffered a four-game sweep at the hands of the Halos last month.<\/p>\n
