Recap: The previous five championship games before this season featured five one-sided affairs as champion teams overpowered their opponents with double-digit winning margins. After the first half of Super Bowl XXIII, the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers were at a 3-3 standoff and was in for a nip-and-tuck affair the rest of the way.
BET ON SPORTSThe score was again tied at 13-13 before Cincinnati took the lead, 16-to-13 with three minutes remaining on a Jim Breech 40-yard field goal. The 49ers responded with a game-winning 92-yard run over 11 plays that included a 10-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Joe Montana to wide receiver John Taylor with 34 seconds to go for a final score of 20-to-16 for the 49ers. San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice, who had 11 receptions for 215 yards and 1 TD, was the Super Bowl XXIII MVP.
