Super Bowl XXXVI

Date: February 3, 2002

Venue: Louisiana Superdome (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Attendance: 72,922

Result: New England Patriots def. St. Louis Rams, 20–17

MVP: Tom Brady (QB, New England)

Recap: The New England Patriots were looking for their first NFL title after failing in the 80’s (Super Bowl XX) and the 90s (Super Bowl XXXI). In Super Bowl XXXVI, they were matched-up against the St. Louis Rams, the favored team to win it this year. However, the Patriots proved early that they were serious in their own title bid leading after the half, 14-to-3 and the third quarter, 17-to-3.

The Rams, as expected, made their run scoring 2 touchdowns to tie the game at 17-17 with 1:37 left in the game.  Starting at their own 17, New England quarterback Tom Brady marched the Patriots all the way to the St. Louise 30 (9 plays, 53 yards) to set up a game-winning field goal (48 yards) from kicker Adam Vinatieri as the Patriots pull off the upset, 20-to-17. Tom Brady was named the Super Bowl XXXVI MVP and he finished with 16-of-27 passes for 145 yards and 1 TD.
