On July 24, the world’s elite golfers will assemble at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada for the 2014 staging of the RBC Canadian Open. A week after Rory McIlroy won his first-ever British Open title, the 156-man field will set out looking for PGA Tour glory as they try to win the $1,026,000 top prize.
Two-time champion Jim Furyk and reigning champion Brandt Snedeker may be the odds-on favorites because of their past success at this event, but there are other talented golfers in the field who will challenge for the title.
Read on to find out which three players we think can put on a charge come Sunday afternoon and in turn maybe good bets as high-value sleeper picks. For more on this tournament, check out our complete tournament preview and predictions.
[sc:MultiSportArticles ]Three 2014 RBC Canadian Open High-Value Sleeper Picks
Hunter Mahan
Hunter Mahan was in prime position last year to win the Canadian Open. He had the lead at the halfway mark when he got a call that his wife was suddenly in labor with their first child. Without batting an eyelash, Mahan left the tournament and joined his wife for the joyous occasion but in the process he lost the chance to win his sixth PGA Tour title.
[sc:Golf240banner ]Prior to his withdrawal though, Mahan was playing some spectacular golf, shooting 13-under-par through two rounds of play as he grabbed a two-shot lead over John Merrick. His familiarity with the golf course and to some extent his success in playing it make him a contender for the title and is priced at +2,500 to grab the tournament win.
Luke Donald
The 36-year-old Englishman had a disappointing British Open last week, finishing in a tie for 64th after a four-over 292. But you can’t discount a title charge from one of the few top-20 players in this week’s field.
Even though he missed the cuts in both the Masters and the U.S. Open this year, he has recorded three top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this year including a second-place finish at the RBC Heritage Classic last April. He will hope to do one better and is priced at +2,200 to finally win his first golf tournament in two years at the Canadian Open.
Graham Delaet
The 36-year-old Canadian may have missed the cut in his first-ever British Open last week but you can never rule out DeLaet from contending in his home tournament this week. Canada’s no. 1 golfer had a fantastic start to the year finishing second in both the Farmers Insurance and the Phoenix Open last January.
He has added two top-10 finishes so far this season and is currently ranked 31st in the FedEx Cup standings and is pegged at +1,800 to win his first Canadian Open title this week.
