Gael Monfils

Gael Monfils finally got the bad taste of that first-round Wimbledon exit out of his mouth by winning the 2016 Citi Open. It was the 29-year-old Frenchman’s first title of the season, and now improves to 15-3 on hard court this season. He’s also reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, as well as the Indian Wells and Miami Masters.

It should be noted, though, that Monfils has failed to escape the second-round of the Rogers Cup each of the last two years. Meanwhile, he could have a potential rematch with his Wimbledon ouster, Jeremy Chardy, in the second round.

Dominic Thiem

After struggling mightily on hard court over the past two years, Dominic Thiem has finally gotten the hang of the surface this season. He’s 14-5 on hard court in 2016, which includes a title in Acapulco.

The world No. 9, who also claimed a grass court title in Stuttgart, reached the round of 16 of the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami earlier this season. However, he doesn’t own a single win against either of his two potential second-round opponents, Viktor Troicki (0-1) and Kevin Anderson (0-4).

The 22-year-old’s massive improvements on hard court shouldn’t be overlooked, though, and he should be considered a dark horse contender for the title in Toronto.

David Goffin

Last but definitely not least, world No. 11 David Goffin will be a big name to look out for this week. The 25-year-old still hasn’t won a singles title this season, but his drought could finally end in Toronto. He already came close in the two outdoor hard court Masters tournaments – Indian Wells and Miami. He was a semifinalist in both tournaments, and is 12-4 on the surface this season.

Goffin made it to the round of 16 of the Rogers Cup last season. He defeated Sam Querrey – his potential second-round opponent this year – in the second round, before falling to Kei Nishikori.
