2016 NCAA Football Week Two Sleepers Predictions
1. Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Tennessee Volunteers
Where: Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol
Date and Time: Saturday, September 10, 8:00 PM ET
Line: Virginia Tech Hokies (+10.5) vs. Tennessee Volunteers (-10.5) – view all NCAA Football odds and lines
No. Tennessee didn’t lose to an FCS squad to open the season. But the Vols were razor thin close to suffering just that when they outlasted upset-seeking Appalachian State last Thursday for a 20-13 overtime victory at home. Didn’t we say it went to overtime? And oh yea, the Vols pocketed the win thanks to a lucky fumble recovery. Winning in that manner against a team the Vols were supposed to beat by three touchdowns isn’t the best way to gain steam heading into a matchup with a team like Virginia Tech. The Hokies weren’t about to embarrass themselves against Liberty last Saturday, defeating the Flames, 36-13.Prediction: Tennessee (-10.5) wins, 32-28.
2. BYU Cougars vs. Utah Utes
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City
Date and Time: Saturday, September 10, 7:30 PM ET
Line: BYU Cougars (+3.5) vs. Utah Utes (-3.5) – view all NCAA Football odds and lines
The Cougars haven’t won against Utah over the last five meetings dating back to 2010. That losing streak may get snapped this weekend though with BYU coming off a thrilling 18-16 win over Arizona. But more than the momentum, the Cougars’ defense is eyeing to teach Utah freshman quarterback Troy Williams a lesson. Williams played well in the Utes’ 24-0 win over Southern Utah last Thursday in which he passed for 272 yards and two touchdowns. But again, he racked up those numbers against an FCS team. It’ll be harder for Williams when he gets BYU’s defense that returns seven starters from the unit that ranked 34th in the nation last season in scoring defense.
Prediction: BYU (+3.5) wins, 24-17.
3. Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Arizona State Sun Devils
Where: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe
Date and Time: Saturday, September 10, 10:00 PM ET
Line: Texas Tech Red Raiders (+3) vs. Arizona State Sun Devils (-3) – view all NCAA Football odds and lines
Merciless. That’s one word to describe Texas Tech following its 69-17 decimation of Stephen F Austin. Nearly wiping the Lumberjacks off the face of the planet, however, isn’t enough for Texas Tech to be deemed the favorite when it pays Tempe a visit this Saturday. After all, that’s an FCS team expected to finish fifth in its conference, which the Red Raiders just annihilated. Still, don’t feel discouraged to bet on TTU against Arizona State. Its offense, led by rising star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, can be problematic even for an Arizona State team that allowed just 13.0 PPG last season.
Prediction: TTU (+3.5) wins, 37-31.
