The minimum gross purse for grabs at the Preakness is $1.5 million guaranteed, putting it in the top 15 among horse races worldwide. Pimlico Race Course increased the purse to that total for the first time in 2014. Only the top-five finishers in the Preakness will get a share of that purse, though. The remaining horses don’t get a dollar. The amounts the top five horses will receive at the 141st Run for the Black-Eyed Susans are enumerated on the table above.
A total of 12 horses will compete in this weekend’s Preakness Stakes. The current odds have Nyquist as the -190 favorite to come away with the $900,000 first-place prize money in this year’s race. Meanwhile, Exaggerator (+375) and Stradivari (+750) are also decent bets to fall within the money-making top-five even if they come up short of victory.
