Favorites – Jason Day (+450) and Dustin Johnson (+500)

It isn’t a complete surprise to see Jason Day and Dustin Johnson installed as favorites to win this week’s RBC Canadian Open. Day and Johnson are the two highest-ranked players in the field and they are playing some excellent golf of late. Day has found the top-25 in 11 of his last 12 starts, firing off three victories and four other top-10s during that stretch. The world no. 1 loves playing in this Glen Abbey course as evidenced by his one-stroke win in this event last year.

Johnson, on the other hand, has been totally lit just the same, winning the U.S. Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in two of his last three starts. The South Carolina native finished tied for ninth in last week’s Open Championship. With the form that they are both in right now, expect Day and Johnson to contend once again for the title this week.

High-Value Sleepers – Jim Furyk (+2,000) and William McGirt (+3,000)

Jim Furyk watches his drive

One golfer who loves playing here at Glen Abbey is Jim Furyk. The 46-year-old veteran has notched top-15s in each of his last three starts here, including a solid fourth-place finish last year. Furyk is starting to rediscover his old form, finishing tied for second in last month’s U.S. Open at Oakmont. Furyk has now made the cut in his last five golf tournaments. He will look to keep the momentum going here at the Canadian Open, the site of his two PGA Tour victories.

Another golfer who’s primed for a huge performance this week is William McGirt. He loves playing in this Glen Abbey course as evidenced by his runner-up finishes here in 2012 and 2013. To illustrate his comfort level with this tournament, McGirt has made five cuts in as many starts at the Canadian Open. He has been playing some excellent golf of late as well, finishing in the top-10 in two of his last four starts. Key to McGirt’s resurgence has been his superb play from tee to green. He is 29th in the PGA Tour in strokes gained in that particular department with an impressive .825 clip. That will be a major weapon for McGirt when dealing with the nooks and crannies of this tough Glen Abbey course.

Long Shot – Hudson Swafford (+8,000)

Looking for a worthy long shot at the Canadian Open this week? How about the hard-hitting Hudson Swafford? The American is one of the longest hitters on tour, averaging a whopping 306.7 yards per drive this season. That’s sixth-best on the PGA Tour this campaign. That extreme length off the tee will be a major weapon for Swafford as he tackles the long 7,253-yard, par-72 course here at Glen Abbey. Swafford is fresh off a 47th-place finish at the Barbasol Championship.

Writer’s Prediction

Jason Day (+450) wins his second consecutive Canadian Open title.
