2017 Mutua Madrid Open Sleeper Picks
Tomas Berdych
The 12th-ranked Berdych will enter as the 11th seed in the Men’s Singles. He has won six of his last eight matches held at a clay environment, and he has advanced up to the third round in seven of his previous 10 tournaments in such a court. Over his 16-plus years as a pro, his record in the clay is 150-82 (64.7 win percentage), with a pair of titles.
Additionally, he’s a respectable 4-4 against Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic in a clay surface.
David Goffin
Goffin, too, has been doing decently on the clay surface as of late. The German has come out on top in seven of his last nine matches on that environment, one of which was a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 upset over current second-seed Djokovic. He has reached the quarterfinals in two of his last three clay tourneys.
Lucas Pouille
The 23-year-old is one of the youngsters of the Mutua Madrid open, hence the modest 13th seed. However, looking at his current stretch, he’s a very attractive sleeper pick. Along with a career record of 25-13 on a clay surface (65.8 win percentage), which includes being 8-1 in his last nine, he’s fresh off a successful title run at the Budapest Open just under a week ago. Further, six of his last eight victories have been straight sets.
