FAVORITES: Ivo Karlovic and John Isner

Current no. 25 Ivo Karlovic may be entering the tournament having lost an uncharacteristic three in a row, while also owning a 2017 record of 11-13 (3-3 on grass), but he should still easily be considered one of the favorites. Aside from being one of the more experienced and higher-ranking guys, he has also established himself as a regular fixture in the event’s finals. He has reached the stage in each of the last three years, and won last year over Giles Muller in a classic back-and-forth affair, 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 7-6(12). Further, he’s 70-37 all-time in ATP play, with three grass-held titles.

John Isner, ranked 21st in the world standings, is in a somewhat similar position. Forget the satisfactory 14-13 record this season (2-4 in his last six), because he too is a battle-tested dude who’s listed higher than any other player in the open. He’s 34-21 all-time on the grass and has a pair of titles in such a surface. It can even be argued that he has an upper hand against Karlovic, since his two victories over the Croatian were the most convincing wins in their career head-to-head matchups.

SLEEPERS: Adrian Mannarino and Adrian Menendez-Maceiras

The 41st-ranked Adrian Mannarino will be on the same boat as Karlovic and Isner, as he is another man that’s rated above the majority of the competition despite all of his ups-and-downs this year. Along with that are his great performances at Wimbledon, where he reached the fourth round and gave the great Novak Djokovic a good challenge before bowing out, and Antalya, where he raced through the finals by only dropping one set and finished as a runner-up to Yuichi Sugita.

World no. 140 Adrian Menendez-Maceiras, who jumped for more than 30 spots in the recent weeks, is the guy to break the trend of higher-ranked guys that should be warranting respect. He is that classic dark horse that’s suddenly racking up wins and rhythm as of late. Fratangelo 28-13 overall this 2017, and has appeared in three finals this year, winning two – Leon Challenger and Samarkland Challenger.

LONG SHOT: Bjorn Fratangelo

No. 142 Bjorn Fratangelo will be a good long shot. Consider him as the event’s darkest dark horse, as he is far from even being a recognizable name even with the decent season he’s been having. He’s 27-16 overall this 2017, and he has reached the third round or better in 11 of his 16 tournaments on the year.
