Expert Picks and Predictions for the US Open Women’s Singles Tournament Running from August 27 to September 9 2018

Zachary Cohen (Sports Illustrated) – Serena Williams

Cohen seemed to have resigned to the line of thinking that there’s no point in picking another player to win the women’s side than Serena Williams. Williams is the Michael Jordan of women’s tennis, and even if she has yet to win a tournament since coming back from a recent pregnancy, she’s trending towards a Grand Slam success after making the finals in the Wimbledon. Cohen is also giving much weight to the intangible fact that Williams  will be buoyed up by a partisan crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

While Serena hasn’t won the U.S. Open since 2014, there are plenty of reasons to believe that she’ll snap that streak this year. Her ongoing process of feeling fully comfortable on the court will be helped by having the crowd at her back, in what will likely be many appearances at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams is +400 to win the 2018 US Open.

Tom Sunderland (Bleacher Report) – Angelique Kerber

Kerber is still on cloud nine after winning the second Grand Slam of her career in the recently concluded Wimbledon tournament. And the woman she beat in the finals? Well, it’s no other than Serena Williams, so in case the two cross paths again, Kerber will have some sort of an advantage, at least psychologically.  Apart from that, the 30-year-old German is quite a performer in Grand Slam competitions this year, having reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the French Open before taking down Williams in Wimbledon.

Gianni Verschueren (Bleacher Report) – Simona Halep

Verschueren believes that Halep will end the year with two Grand Slam titles. The Romanian has already won her first ever Grand Slam in the French Open last July which she followed up with a disappointing Round of 32 exit in the Wimbledon. That being said, Halep is near unbeatable on hard court matches so far this year, as she is 28-4 on the said surface as of this writing. She’s definitely ready to go in the US Open after winning the Rogers Cup (hard court) earlier this month and finishing as a runner-up to Kiki Bertens in the Western & Southern Open (hard court) in Cincinnati last week.

Ryan Simpson (TopBet Writer) – Serena Williams
