Pitching Edge – New York Yankees (EVEN)
Pitching for the Mets in the opening game of this two-game set is Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.12 ERA). He allowed three runs over seven innings with seven strikeouts and three walks in a no-decision Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. New York lost that game, 5-4. That was the third-straight no-decision for Verrett. The Mets have now lost seven of their last 10 games with Verrett as their starter.Meanwhile, the New York Yankees will counter with CC Sabathia. He was solid in his last start, allowing just two runs on four hits in 6.2 innings of action in the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Houston Astros. It was the first time in seven appearances that Sabathia has yielded fewer than four runs. The veteran lefty owns a 3.95 ERA to go along with a 1.35 WHIP in 2016.
Batting Edge – New York Mets (-110)
The bats have gone pretty silent for both the Big Apple clubs heading into the opening game of their Subway Series tonight. The Mets have scored just 14 runs over their last five games, posting a 1-4 record during that stretch. The Yankees, on the other hand, have managed to score just eight runs over their last four outings, going winless during that span. That isn’t much of a surprise, though, considering both clubs have been abysmal at the plate all season. The Mets are third-worst in the majors in runs scored (381) and RBIs (371) this campaign. The Bronx Bombers have failed to live up to their billing, racking up just 394 RBIs this season, fifth-lowest in the entire MLB.
That being said, we give the slight edge in this matchup to the Mets because of their hitters’ home run power. They have hit a whopping 133 homers this season, third-highest in the National League this campaign. Expected to lead the Mets’ attack tonight is Yoenis Cespedes. He leads the Mets in homers (22), RBIs (58), hits (95), batting average (.291) and on-base percentage (.365) this season. Cespedes is just 2-of-14, though, lifetime against Yankees starter CC Sabathia.
Writer’s Prediction: The Mets (-110) edge past the Yankees, 5-4.
