2016 NCAA Football Week 9 Sleepers Predictions
Northwestern (+27) vs. Ohio State (-27) – Oct. 29, 3:30 PM ET
The spread keeps getting higher in this game. The Buckeyes, who are coming off a shock loss at Penn State, have now gone from a 21.5-point favorite all the way up to -27 as of this writing. That represents fairly decent value for the Northwestern Wildcats, who have been very impressive in recent weeks.
The Wildcats have won three games in a row – at Iowa (38-31), at Michigan State (54-40) and vs. Indiana (24-14). The offense has perked up with quarterback Clayton Thorson (11 TDs in last three games) and Justin Jackson (151 rushing yards per game in his last three).
The combination of passable offense and solid defense (24.4 points allowed in five games vs. Power 5 teams) should be enough to see the Wildcats stay within a respectable distance.
Writer’s Prediction: Northwestern (+27) covers in a 35-17 loss to the Buckeyes.
Boise State (-13.5) vs. Wyoming (+13.5) – Oct. 29, 7:00 PM ET
The 7-0 Boise State Broncos are one of just nine undefeated teams left in the FBS, but they have struggled in recent weeks. They could only beat Colorado State and BYU by a combined six points at home. They also haven’t been as dominant in conference play, going just 5-3 straight up and 2-6 ATS in their last eight Mountain Division games.
Meanwhile, the Wyoming Cowboys are a team on the rise. They’re 5-2 on the season, and are tied with Boise State atop the Mountain Division. The Cowboys will come into this contest 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three games. There’s bound to be an electric atmosphere in Laramie, with the Cowboys fully confident they can tame the reeling Broncos.
Writer’s Prediction: Boise State ekes out a 27-24 win, but Wyoming (+13.5) covers easily.
Clemson (-4.5) vs. Florida State (+4.5) – Oct. 29, 8:00 PM ET
Even in victory, Florida State hasn’t looked particularly impressive. Miami isn’t as good as previously though, and the Noles could only beat them by one. Meanwhile, they could score just 17 points against Wake Forest. However, they should not be underestimated as home underdogs.
Clemson also hasn’t looked incredible apart from its big win over Louisville, and the Noles – who now have only this and the Florida game left to get up for – still have the talent to wreck the Tigers’ College Football Playoff hopes. Florida State is 9-1 at home against Clemson, and the underdog has gone 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
Writer’s Prediction: Florida State (+4) upsets Clemson as the Noles win outright, 31-27.
