Betting on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (-170)
After a rocky four-set first-round win over Thiago Monteiro, World No. 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cleaned up his game and defeated second-round opponent Dusan Lajovic in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
Tsonga completed less than half of his first serves against Monteiro, but was able to raise that to 57 percent against Lajovic. He also won 84 percent of his first serve points and cut down his unforced errors from 36 to 25.
Tsonga’s more known for his strong serve, but his return game has been on point so far. He’s won 46 percent of return points and has converted 45 percent of break point opportunities.
That return game served Tsonga well in his last meeting against third-round opponent Jack Sock in last year’s US Open. The Frenchman won 41 percent of return points and broke the America six times in 13 attempts to claim the four-set win, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-2.
Tsonga is a perfect 2-0 against Sock in his career. He’s also gone through to the fourth round of the Australian Open in seven of his last eight attempts.
Betting on Jack Sock (+140)
Jack Sock has been in great form to start 2017. The American World No. 20 won the Auckland Classic ahead of the Australian Open, and he’s ridden the momentum of that win into the first Grand Slam of the season.
Sock is through to the third round of the Aussie Open for the first time in his career, and he’s done it in fine fashion. He has yet to drop a set in his first two matches in Melbourne. He took care of first-round opponent Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 6-4 7-6(4) 6-3, and had a more comfortable time against Karen Khachanov, whom he beat 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
Sock’s trademark powerful serve hasn’t been delivering too many aces – he has just 17 through two matches – but he has been able to compensate by winning 80 percent of his first serve points. However, Sock must cut down on his unforced errors to get past the World No. 12 Tsonga. Sock committed 45 unforced errors against Khachanov against just 40 winners.
Writer’s Prediction
Sock puts up a tough fight, but Tsonga (-170) rallies and takes the match in four sets.
