Betting on the Green Bay Packers

Point spread: +3

The Packers’ backups needed no part of Aaron Rodgers in their first preseason game of the year, as they systematically dismantled the Philadelphia Eagles last week, 24-9. Just like when they have Rodgers under center, the Packers rode on their passing game to thwart Philly with a trio of quarterbacks combining for 214 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Brett Hundley started the game and finished with 90 passing yards on 8 of 15 completions with a TD and the team’s lone interception pass.

Among the rookies who impressed in the game was a pair of defensive standouts in defensive end Derek Barnett and cornerback Kevin King. Barnett recorded two sacks against the Eagles, while King recorded a forced fumble while turning heads downfield with some physical play. Rookie wide receiver Malachi Dupre is labeled questionable for Saturday’s game, though, after getting concussed in the Green Bay contest.

Despite limiting the Eagles to just a single-digit score, Green Bay did allow Philly to get 322 total yards against the Packers’ 261. Green Bay has to set the tone early on defense this time around after letting Carson Wentz go 4 of 4 on his first four passes.

Betting on the Washington Redskins

Point spread: -3

It was a nightmare of sorts for the Redskins in Week 1 of the preseason. Washington was socked in the face by the Baltimore Ravens, who earned a convincing 23-3 win in a glorified practice game last Thursday. The good news for them is that no one would remember that game. Plus they got a shot to rebound this Saturday against the Packers.

Kirk Cousins played went just 1 of 2 for five yards against Baltimore and that’s probably the ceiling of the Redskins’ interest in him appearing on the field against an array of backups and soon-to-be-cut players. Instead, look for the pair of Nate Sudfield and Colt McCoy to handle most of the quarterbacking duties against Green Bay. But there’s got to be more support coming from the backfield for Washington, which made just 39 rushing yards in the Ravens game.

Over at the other side of the ball, rookie Jonathan Allen recorded a sack. Allen was the team’s first-round pick so seeing him do what he was expected of when he was taken 17th overall in the recent draft is a positive.

Writer’s Prediction
