Betting on the Tennessee Titans
As a trendy pick at becoming a real AFC playoff contender this upcoming season, the Tennessee Titans are actually failing to meet their expectations thus far. They’re just 1-2 this preseason, with their only other road game resulting to a 7-3 stinker against the lowly New York Jets in Week 2.
Obviously, Titans head coach Mike Mularkey has not been impressed with his team’s progress this preseason; so much so that he decided to keep his starters on the field until the final quarter in last Sunday’s 19-7 home win against the Chicago Bears, only taking his starting unit off the field after his team scored its first and only touchdown in that final frame.
In turn, Mularkey said that he wants his starters to play heavy minutes again in the preseason finale against the Chiefs, and that sounds like good news for bettors looking to side with Tennessee in Week 4. Then again, quarterback Marcus Mariota and Co. know better than to give it their all this Thursday at the risk of getting hurt.
And unfortunately, it’s injuries to a couple of the Titans’ starters that’ll also keep the the team from performing at an optimal level. Wideouts Eric Decker (ankle) and rookie Corey Davis (hamstring) will remain on the sidelines as they continue to recover from their respective ailments, leaving Tennessee with a depleted starting roster regardless.
Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have an identical 1-2 record with the Titans and weren’t safe from the injury bug this preseason as well.
On the plus side, the Chiefs have scored 16 more points in the preseason than the Titans. However, they had the services of starting running back Spencer Ware through those three games. Ware suffered a torn PCL in Week 3’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks and will likely miss the entire regular season, dealing Kansas City a huge blow to its offense.
On the other hand, the team’s backups have looked pretty impressive this preseason nontheless. Running back Kareem Hunt seems like the heir to Ware’s starting job and will now get more touches in preparation for his real professional debut. Even third-stringer Charcandrick West, who had seven carries for 113 yards in the Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, appears in fine form to share reps with his fellow back just the same.
Above all else, it’s rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes who’s been the highlight player for the Chiefs this preseason. The 10th-overall pick from this year’s draft has gone a combined 28-of-46 through the air (60.8 percent) for three passing touchdowns and no picks this preseason.
Mahomes and Hunt appear to make a great tandem in these warm-up sessions, and KC needs this upstart duo to put on one last solid preseason performance this Thursday. As it stands, the two rookies have delivered some promising results indeed.
