Expert Picks and Predictions for the US Open of Tennis Men’s Singles Tournament Running from August 27 to September 9, 2018

Zachary Cohen (Sports Illustrated) – Juan Martin del Potro

If Cohen is a music lover, he’s probably the type who listens to indie bands he’s convinced no one has ever heard of yet. Cohen has a very hipster pick for this upcoming US Open, selecting Juan Martin del Potro as the player the Sports Illustrated writer thinks will top the tournament in New York. Cohen, however, names the Argentinian as his pick not for the sake of going against the flow but because he’s been impressed for what Del Potro has put together this season.

From Cohen:

“While Djokovic, Nadal and Federer are the names that most people will be backing this year, del Potro is being overlooked. The big Argentine has just one Grand Slam title in his career—at the U.S. Open, in 2009—but he has enjoyed a major bounce-back season.

Indeed, del Potro, who is +1,000 to win the US Open, is having a nice year with two titles so far in 2018. He has not won a Grand Slam  this year, but he made it to the semis of the French Open and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Let’s not also forget that del Potro has won in the US Open in 2009 and reached the quarters and the semis in 2016 and 2017, respectively.”

Tom Sunderland (Bleacher Report) – Novak Djokovic

Unlike Cohen, Sunderland is going for the hot pick for the US Open. Djokovic is doing a fantastic job of making up for the time he lost last year because of an injury.  In his most recent Grand Slam participation, he ended a two year Grand Slam drought by topping the field in Wimbledon. Prior to that, he reached the quarters of the French Open. Djokovic is back to his vintage form, and that, along with his enviable track record in the US Open, is why he’s +250 to win his third US Open.

“We’re backing Djokovic to go all the way this time around and win a third crown in New York in what would be his eighth appearance in the tournament’s final.”

Gianni Verschueren (Bleacher Report) – Novak Djokovic

Verschueren is just one of the many fans and pundits who are thoroughly liking what Djokovic is doing. As a testament to the Serbian’s readiness to conquer the competition in the US Open, he sharpened up his game on the hard court by topping the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati this month. He defeated Roger Federer in the finals, thus becoming the first player ever to collect all nine Master 1000 tournament titles. Djokovic is 11-4 in hard court matches this year.

Pat Cash (BBC Sport) – Roger Federer/Rafael Nadal

Cash of BBC Sport was thrilled by Djokovic’s performance in Wimbledon, but as impressed as he was of the Serbian’s late exploits, he simply just could not ignore the two tennis monoliths of this generation, saying that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will show why they are still the top picks to win in New York.

“I thought Novak would peak at the US Open. I think it is impressive he came back a little bit early. I thought the US Open would be about the right time – it is very interesting. We still have these older players.”

Cash did not name his pick, but it’s safe to say he feels that the title will be won by either Federer or Nadal.
