The National League has been the whipping boys of the MLB All-Star Game for some time now, but any team with Hyun-jun Ryu on top of the rotation just can’t be counted out. Ryu has been nothing but sensational as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ best pitcher this season. Yes, it’s not Clayton Kershaw (who’s also an All-Star this year, by the way), but Ryu, who is sporting a 9-2 record and a majors-best 1.83 ERA. He’s the only qualified starter this season with an ERA lower than 2.00. Behind Ryu is Max Scherzer, who once pitched this season a day after breaking his nose during batting practice. That feat alone didn’t earn him an All-Star team spot, but it says a lot about how competitive the man is. On offense, the National League All-Stars won’t have any shortage in elite bats. Reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich, who leads the majors in home runs will be joined by Cody Bellinger, Javier Baez, and Ronald Acuna Jr. to name a few in the starting lineup. The NL reserves also feature New York Mets rookie sensation Pete Alonso, whos been lighting it up at the plate this year.

The American League team will waltz into the All-Star Game thumping their chests. After all, they’ve dominated this event over the past several years. They have won each of the last six versions of the Midsummer Classic. Last year, they defeated the NL at Nationals Park, 8-6. Justin Verlander is likely to get the ball for the AL’s starting pitching duties. Verlander is having yet another strong year. The Astros’ ace is 10-3 with a 2.86 ERA across 18 starts this season, as of this writing. Verlander will be joined by teammate Gerrit Cole. Another interesting part of the AL’s pitching staff is the inclusion of Tampa Bay Rays hurler Charlie Morton, who is making his first All-Star appearance at the age of 33. As for the bullpen, look for Cleveland Indians pitcher Brad Hand to close the game since the event will be at Progressive Field. The batting order is loaded for the AL, as they boasts the likes of Mike Trout, Alex Bregman, who was the All-Star MVP last year, Gary Sanchez, and DJ leMahieu.
