Goerges eked out a 6-1, 6-4 win over Varvara Flink in the second round of the 2019 Wimbledon women’s singles tournament to advance to the next round, where a tennis legend in Williams awaits her. Goerges entered the Wimbledon in fine form on grass, having made the Finals of the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham, ending up as the runner-up to Ashleigh Barty. Then she kicked off her Wimbledon campaign with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Against Flink, Goerges put just 47 percent of her first serves in but won 87 percent of her first-serve points. She’ll have to be much better on her serves against Williams, who is known to have a strong return game. Georges has met Williams four times before, losing in all of those matches. She lost to Williams in straight sets back the semifinals of the 2018 Wimbledon, which was their last showdown to date.
Betting on Serena Williams (-260)
Williams had a rough start in her second-round match against 18-year-old Kaja Juvan but recovered to win the contest to the tune of a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 score. Williams admitted that he started off slowly, which the young Juvan took advantage of, but his experience in handling pressure clearly helped her take control eventually. Williams put 54 percent of her first serves in and won 77 percent of her first-serve points. She also converted four of 10 break-point chances, though, she was also broken thrice. Williams has been slowed down by a knee injury this year, but that doesn’t seem to be bothering her significantly in the London tournament. In fact, she’s even part of the mixed doubles together with Andy Murray. If anything, fatigue could be a bigger problem for her than her knees at this moment. Williams is 92-11 all time at Wimbledon.
Writer’s Prediction
