Ashleigh Barty
Even though Barty failed to meet the lofty expectations on her at the recently concluded 2019 Wimbledon women’s singles tournament, she’ll be among the top contenders for the Rogers Cup this year. Barty, who got booted out of Wimbledon in the fourth round by Alison Riske, remains as the No. 1 woman in the world. It also wasn’t that long ago when she won a Grand Slam at Roland Garros and a Round of 16 exit in London wasn’t something to scoff at. If anything, her loss to Riske only lit a fire underneath the diminutive Australian, who said that she’s “driven and more and more hungry than ever to try and get better ,” per Tennis World USA.
Naomi Osaka
After having a nice start to the year by topping the 2019 Australian Open women’s singles tournament back in January, Osaka has been a bit shaky in most of the succeeding events she’s participated in. She flunked out of the 2019 French Open with a round of 32 exit and was victimized by Yulia Putintseva in a gigantic first-round defeat at the 2019 Wimbledon. In Canada this coming weekend, Osaka will look not only for her second title of the season but also a better performance to make it easier for her to forget a first-round exit in last year’s edition of the Rogers Cup in which she suffered a defeat at the hands of Carla Suarez Navarro. However, Osaka must have already done the latter part when he followed up that poor showing in Canada with a win at the US Open, defeating Serena Williams in the Finals. Osaka has a 12-4 record on hard courts this year.She was also the champion of the 2018 Indian Wells (hard court) women’s singles champion.
SLEEPERS
Angelique Kerber
Kerber is yet to win a title this 2019, but she’s considered as among the more solid women players on the hard court. The 31-year-old German will have experience on her side against most of her opponents at Rogers Cup, and owns a 16-7 record on hard-court matches this 2019. She nearly pocketed her first title of the year when she reached the Finals of the 2019 Indian Wells Master, losing only to Bianca Vanessa Andreescu in three sets. Among other achievements Kerber has had on the hard court include a win at the 2016 US Open and the 2016 Australian Open.
Johanna Konta
Konta has flirted with Grand Slam success twice this year, as she reached the semifinals and the quarterfinals of the 2019 French Open and the 2019 Wimbledon, respectively. Those shortcomings should only inspire her to be better in any tournaments she’s playing in moving forward, including this weekend’s 2019 Rogers Cup. Last year, Konta reached the Rogers Cup round of 16 but was defeated there by Elina Svitolina. Still, that’s quite an improvement from her round-of-32 exit at the 2017 Rogers Cup. Konta doesn’t have a shortage of success on the hard court, as she’s won the 2017 WTA Apia International in Sydney and the WTA Miami Open that same year.
LONG SHOT
Caroline Wozniacki
Wozniacki is still without a title this year, and if this trend continues, 2019 will be the first time in over 10 years that she’d finish a trip around the sun without something to put on her championship trophy case. However, Wozniacki could use the 2019 Rogers Cup as her springboard to more success. After all, she’s topped the tournament back in 2010 and finished runner up in 2017.
