After a stop at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge down in Orlando, the PGA TOUR will make a short trip to Ponta Verde Beach, still in Florida, for the 2020 The Players Championship. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion of the tournament, as he edged out Jim Furyk by the closes of margins (by a single stroke) last year. McIlroy has a chance to do what no one has accomplished in 7 years — win multiple The Players Championship events. The last one to do it was Tiger Woods in 2013. Woods has already ruled out his participation for the upcoming The Players Championship, citing back issues, but there will still be plenty of outstanding golfers teeing off at the TPC Sawgrass, where a total of $15 million is up for grabs.

The Total Payout – $15 million
For the third year in a row, the total payout at The Players Championship has gone up. From $10.5 million in 2017, it went to $11 million in 2018. Then it made a relatively big jump to $12.5 million in 2019. This year, the purse will be fattened by $2.5 million more, bringing the sum to a sparkling $15 million. This is the richest tournament currently on the PGA TOUR, so definitely expect the top guns to come out and play under the sun in Florida this week. The winner will take home a juicy cut worth $2.7 million or more than the salary of Los Angeles Lakers big man Dwight Howard this season, which is at $2.64 million. Last year, McIlroy pocketed $2.250 million for his win.
