Betting on the Iran (+26.5)
Iran, as expected, got crushed by an angry American squad that was looking to bounce back from a loss in its opener. The Iranians were simply no match for Team USA, as they absorbed a 120-66 loss. But at least Iran will not be facing a team with more talent than that the rest of the way. The Iranians most likely didn’t think about the possibility of beating Team USA, but their confidence should be higher this time around against France. Les Bleus might have beaten Team USA, but Iran should be able to match up better against the Europeans. Rudy Gobert can still have his full around the hulking Hamed Haddadi, who scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss to Team USA. Haddadi also had 15 points and 10 rebounds in Iran’s 84-78 loss to the Czech Republic. The key for Iran will be getting more production from the perimeter, so Mohammad Jamshidijafarabadi and Mohammadsamad Nik Khahbahrami will have pressure to deliver for their team this Friday.
Betting on the France (-26.5)
Who’s going to stop Evan Fournier and France? Fournier waxed hot again in France’s 97-77 demolition job of the Czech Republic which came after Les Bleus scored an upset victory over Team USA in the opener. Fournier scored 28 points against Team USA and shot 8 of 13 from the field for 21 points against the Czech Republic. France has also gotten its rhythm from deep, as it shot 13 of 30 from behind the arc in its last game. The guns will keep on firing from long range for France, with its superior backcourt tandem of Fournier and Nando de Colo. De Colo is averaging 17.0 points on 58.3 percent shooting from the field so far in this Olympics. Iran’s biggest threat to France is Haddadi, but fortunately for France, it has the best defensive big man on the planet in Gobert. The Stifle Tower had six points and 10 rebounds against the Czech Republic.
Writer’s Prediction
France wins, 100-77.
