Betting on the Atlanta Braves (-1.5)
Record: 33-27
The Braves are red hot at the moment. They will be rolling to Nationals Park with an 11-game win streak, having swept the Colorado Rockies, Oakland A’s, and the Pittsburgh Pirates over that span. Atlanta’s hitting and pitching are in sync and the Braves will be looking to continue their winning ways later tonight with Ian Anderson starting for them on the mound. Anderson has picked up a couple of wins during the Braves’ current undefeated run. Moreover, Atlanta is 3-0 in his last three starts. Anderson is 5-3 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.39 ERA – numbers that don’t jump out off the page, but he will be pitching in front of an Atlanta offense that is third in the MLB in both wOBA (.374) and wRC+ (139) over the last 14 days.
The Braves are 5-0 in their last 5 road games.
Betting on the Washington Nationals (+1.5)
Record: 23-38 Conference
The Nationals are coming off a 4-1 home loss to the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, but they did win that three-game series. Washington’s offense was piping hot prior to that loss, scoring 19 runs in the first two games of that Milwaukee series, and the Nationals could recapture their form tonight against Anderson. The Braves may be riding a big wave of momentum, but Anderson isn’t that unhittable. On the season, Washington is second in the majors this season with a .257 batting average and seventh with a .322 OBP. Starting for Washington is righty Josiah Gray, who’s been solid of late. In fact, he has gone 2-0 with just 2 earned runs on 11 hits with 18 strikeouts over his last 3 starts.
The Over has gone 5-1 in the Nationals’ last 6 outings during Game 1 of a series.
Writer’s Prediction
The Braves win, 5-4.
