Betting on the Chicago Cubs (+1.5)

Regular Season Record: 41-60

The Cubs send Keegan Thompson to the mound this Tuesday, as they look to come back to life following a 4-0 road loss to the San Francisco Giants Monday. It’s becoming more and more obvious that this is a lost season for Chicago, which will be among the teams to watch out for ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline. Thompson, meanwhile, will try to do his job after a successful start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 26. In that game, Thompson pitched for 7.0 innings and allowed zero runs and only four hits. On the season, Thompson is 3-2 with a 4.40 ERA in eight total appearances on the road. The Cubs’ offense is slashing .244/.319/.395 this season. Willson Contreras and Ian Happ are batting .252 and .280, respectively, this year.

Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (-1.5)

Regular Season Record: 54-48

The Cardinals are fresh off a 5-0 win over the struggling Washington Nationals on Sunday to put St. Louis back in the win column. St. Louis will send veteran Adam Wainwright to the mound for Game 1 of this series against the Cubs. Wainwright has a 7-8 record and a 3.28 ERA along with a 1.21 WHIP. The last time he saw action, Wainwright gave up only an earned run on five hits in 7.0 innings of a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on the road ib July 27.. That was a solid recovery for the 40-year-old Wainwright who allowed seven earned runs in a prior start against the Cincinnari Reds on July 22. The Cardinals’ offense is slashing .251/.321/.407 this season.

Writer’s Prediction

The Cardinals win, 5-4.
