Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (29-19)
With the three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox, the Diamondbacks have now won eight of their last nine games. Thanks to that run, they have jumped into the second spot in the National League-West, making them only three games out of first place.
Over that stretch, the offense and defense have both taken center stage, as they have scored five or more in each of those wins and have held opponents to just a single run in three of their last six. Additionally, Wednesday’s 8-6 win was the seventh time in 14 games where they had 11 or more hits.
Though the team has a good list of quality hitters, the hot batting is still mostly about Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Owings, who each have 50-plus hits on the season while also batting above the .310 mark.
As for the defense, it will be led by starting pitcher Robbie Ray. He’s 3-3 with a 3.91 ERA this season, but 2-1 with a clean 1.03 ERA in four road starts. It’s an appealing stat, but at the home run-friendly Miller Park, it sure isn’t.
Betting on the Milwaukee Brewers (25-21)
The Brewers dropped yet another game. Wednesday’s 8-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays was their third consecutive defeat, and it’s one more blemish to the strong stretch they just had, where they won nine of 11.
Batting has been awful in their last three – 23-for-101 (.227) – but pitching and fielding are arguably just as bad. They have surrendered a combined 24 runs, 23 RBIs, and 34 hits in those outings.
With former MVP Ryan Braun, rising talent Travis Shaw, and fantasy baseball steal Eric Thames as the key hitters, among others, the recent tepid play on the plate is very uncharacteristic of the Brewers. They should be able to get the club out of this slump at some point, although it’s a bit tough to call if it’ll happen on Thursday’s contest.
Zach Davies, meanwhile, is set to take the mound once again. The second-year pitcher has risen from his ugly start, as he has earned five wins in his last six starts, while recording a 3.94 ERA in that span. The D-Backs’ batters have struck out eight times in 17 at-bats against him all-time.
