Braves right Spencer Strider will be finally getting a taste of what it’s like to start in a major-league game, as he opens things up for the team this Monday against Arizona. Prior to getting the nod to start, Strider has logged in all his innings so far this season as part of the Braves’ bullpen. Across 13.1 total innings in 11 appearances, the 23-year-old Strider has posted a 2.36 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. It’s very possible that Atlanta won’t leave him out on the mound long, so the team’s bullpen might have an expanded role in this contest. The good thing is that Atlanta’s bullpen is among the best in the MLB, as it’s 10th overall with a 3.30 ERA and tops in FIP (2.91). Austin Riley and Matt Olson headline Atlanta’s hitting, as they are posting .813 OPS and .811 OPS, respectively, this season.
The Braves are 6-1 in their last 7 games as a favorite.
Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (+1.5)
Record: 23-25 Conference
Arizona just got swept in a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at home, which was unfortunate for the Diamondbacks, but at least they’re no longer facing arguably the best team in the MLB today until after the All-Star break. On the mound for the Diamondbacks this Monday will be right Zach Gallen, who is undefeated so far this season. Gallen is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in eight starts this year. In his most recent appearance, however, Gallen got tagged for six earned runs on seven hits by the Kansas City Royals on May 25, but he was able to escape with a no-decision thanks to Arizona’s offense, as they came away with an 8-6 home victory. Speaking of which, Arizona catcher Dalton Varsho is having quite a season, hitting .264/.335/.478 with 8 home runs and 21 RBIs.
The Diamondbacks are 5-1 in their last 6 vs. teams from the National League East.
Writer’s Prediction
The Braves win, 4-3.
