The Detroit Tigers extended their winning streak to two games with a resounding 7-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday. Michael Fulmer pitched a four-hitter to become the first Detroit rookie to throw a complete-game shutout since Justin Verlander 10 years ago. The Tigers will look to stretch their unbeaten run even further when they take on the surging Kansas City Royals in the opening game of their three-game set tonight. Starting for Detroit this evening is Daniel Norris (1-0, 4.00 ERA). He was superb in his last outing, throwing five innings of one-run ball in the Tigers’ 6-5 loss to Seattle on Tuesday. Norris will be making just his second start since returning from Triple-A Toledo.

The Royals, on the other hand, will have Ian Kennedy (6-9, 3.91 ERA) as their starter tonight. He has been excellent over his last three starts, allowing just two runs in 19.1 innings during that span. Unfortunately for Kennedy, he didn’t pick up a victory in each of those three outings. In fact, he has gone winless in his last eight starts, with his last victory coming June 26 against the Houston Astros. In two starts against the Tigers this season, Kennedy has a loss and a no-decision despite surrendering a combined three earned runs.

The Tigers are 6-2 in their last eight home games against the Royals.

Writer’s Prediction

Detroit wins, 5-2.

Washington Nationals vs. Colorado Rockies (8:40 PM ET)

Line: Washington Nationals (-180) at Colorado Rockies (+160); total: 9.5 – view all MLB lines

Colorado’s losing woes show no sign of abating as they suffered a 7-6 defeat to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. It was another disappointing setback for the Rockies who have now lost seven of their last eight games. They are now 5.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the second and final wild card spot in the National League.

Pitching has been the main problem for Colorado of late, with the Rockies allowing a whopping 58 runs over their last eight games. The onus then is on Jorge De La Rosa (7-7, 5.25 ERA) to deliver a solid start for the Rockies tonight. The southpaw has eight quality starts (six or more innings, three or fewer earned runs) in his last 10 outings. The Rockies, however, have lost four of their last five games with De La Rosa on the mound.

The Nationals, on the other hand, will counter with Max Scherzer (12-7, 2.80 ERA). He gave up one earned run on three hits and a walk over seven innings in Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians. His 10 strikeouts against the Indians gave him the MLB lead with 208 on the year and marked Scherzer’s fifth straight season of 200-plus Ks.

The Nationals are 6-4 in their last 10 games against the Rockies.

Writer’s Prediction

The Nationals ease past the Rockies, 8-3.
