Pitching Edge – Boston Red Sox
David Price (9-7, 4.30 ERA) is still searching for his old dominant self. He enters this series finale against the Dodgers having allowed seven hits and four earned runs in his last start, which was last Tuesday versus the Mariners. And yes, the Red Sox lost that encounter, 5-4, marking their fourth-consecutive setback with Price on the mound. In spite of Price’s inconsistencies this season, there are a handful of moments that he does manage to deliver the goods at least. In fact, the left-handed veteran could be in line to do so later as his lone career start against Los Angeles, which was back in 2013, went really well. He registered seven innings of one-run ball along with four strikeouts. Can Price, who is just 3-4 with a 4.26 ERA on the road this year, manufacture another performance like that tonight?
Meanwhile, Brandon McCarthy (2-2, 2.76 ERA) will be the one starting for the Dodgers. He’s received the loss in his last two outings. In that stretch, the righty has given up seven hits and five earned runs across seven innings. It’s quite unlikely to see a redemptive kind of performance from him though, considering McCarthy owns a 4.75 ERA through 10 career games (seven starts) versus Boston.
Batting Edge – Boston Red Sox
Boston, which currently leads the MLB in runs (5.49), hits (10.06), runs batted in (5.24) and doubles (2.26) per game, clearly has the advantage at the plate. The Red Sox are loaded with a bunch of powerful hitters who can get it going at any given moment. To name a few, there’s their batting leader Xander Bogaerts (.319) and the streaking Mookie Betts.
Bogaerts has been pretty quiet in the first two games of this series with the Dodgers, going just 2-of-9 in that span. But there’s a reason why he’s currently one of the top batters in Boston, so you can never count him out.
Betts, however, is on fire right now and the Red Sox can expect him to keep it going. He’s batting .378 with three doubles, two homers and six RBIs in his last eight games. He’s also looking to extend his hitting streak to nine-consecutive games tonight.
Writer’s Prediction: Boston wins it, 7-2.
