GAME 1
Starters: Jon Lester (5-4, 3.56 ERA) vs. Clayton Kershaw (5-1, 3.14 ERA)
Pitching:
Lester is set to pitch the opener of this series after picking up a win in a 9-4 home victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Jun. 8 in which he allowed four earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. He held the Dodgers to one run in 5.0 innings of action on the mound, but did not get much run support in a 2-1 home loss back in April. Kershaw got his first record’s first blemish of the season in a 2-1 road loss to the San Francisco Giants on Jun. 7. However, he is 4-0 with a 3.10 ERA in six home starts this season.
Hitting
Javier Baez is 3-for-8 with a homer in career vs. Kershaw.
David Freeses is 9-for-32 in career vs. Lester.
Prediction: Dodgers win, 4-3.
GAME 2
Starters: Kyle Hendricks (7-4, 3.00 ERA) vs. Rich Hill (3-1, 2.40 ERA)
Pitching:
Hendricks is on a groove right now. He comes into this ball game following a start against the Cardinals on Jun. 9, when he allowed just an earned run on eight hits across 7.0 innings. Prior to that, he surrendered three earned runs on six hits to go with 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of a 6-3 home win over the Colorado Rockies. He’s pitched at least seven innings deep in each of his past three starts. Hill gave up two earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of a 7-2 road win over the Giants on Jun. 8. Hill is 1-1 with a 1.25 ERA in four starts at Dodgers Stadium this season.
Hitting
Baez is batting .378 against lefties this season as of this writing.
Justin Turner is 3-for-8 with a homer in career vs. Hendricks.
Prediction: Chicago wins, 5-4.
GAME 3
Starters: Yu Darvish (2-3, 4.88 ERA) vs. Walker Buehler (7-1, 3.35 ERA)
Pitching:
Darvish last 5.1 innings in his last start, a 9-8 win over the Colorado Rockies at home, but did settled for a no-decision. He allowed two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in that game. He is 2-1 with a 3.64 ERA in six road starts this season. Buehler has gone 3-0 over his last four starts with a 2.42 ERA over that span.
Hitting
Carlos Gonzalez is 3-for-12 in career vs. Buehler.
Russell Martin is 2-for-5 in career vs. Darvish.
Prediction: Dodgers win, 5-4.
GAME 4
Starters: Jose Quintana (4-5, 3.77 ERA) vs. Hyu-Jin Ryu (9-1, 1.35 ERA)
Pitching:
Quintana’s search for his first win since early May continues. In his last start, he allowed three earned runs on six hits across 7.1 innings of mound duty, but just didn’t have enough run support in a 3-1 home win to the Rockies on Jun. 6. Quintana is 1-2 with a 5.02 ERA in five road starts this season. Ryu has been nothing but sensational for the Dodgers. The Dodgers have won in all of Ryu’s last six starts. Over that span, Ryu has pitched at least 6.0 innings deep in each game and allowed just two earned runs in total.
Hitting
Carlos Gonzalez is 5-for-15 in career vs. Ryu.
Chris Taylor is 4-for-9 in career vs. Quintana.
Prediction: Dodgers win, 4-2.
Writer’s Overall Series Prediction
Dodgers take three of four games.
