Betting on the Green Bay Packers (+3.5)

After the humiliating 42-24 defeat to the Washington Redskins on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers are definitely panicking and slowly losing grip of their playoff chances at the worst time. It was the fourth-straight loss for the Packers, who are now a full two games behind both the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings for the top spot in the NFC North standings.

In typical fashion, Aaron Rodgers was spectacular in leading his team’s aerial assault. He finished with 355 passing yards to go with three touchdowns and a glowing 115.0 QB rating in Sunday’s game. Rodgers connected with seven different receivers. Each got at least three catches and 20 or more receiving yards, and with Jordy Nelson, James Starks and Jared Cook all finding the end zone once.

But for as much as the Packers lit up the Redskins’ defense, they were roasted even worse by their opponent. They surrendered a mind-numbing 515 yards to Washington in the loss, which is the most that they’ve given up since 1998.

An even more telling number of the Cheeseheads’ woes on D is that they’ve given up a total of 153 points during their four-game slide, which is the most points allowed by any NFL team within a four-game span since 1958. Not even the return of stud linebacker Clay Matthews from his month-long hamstring injury was enough to fix Green Bay’s stop unit on Sunday.

Now the Packers have to bounce back from a second-consecutive primetime road contest in the East Coast, and the team’s chances of prevailing victorious appears very slim at that. They’re merely 1-3 away from Lambeau this season (SU/ATS), with their only win being a four-point squeaker against the lowly Jaguars in Jacksonville.

Betting on the Philadelphia Eagles (-3.5)

The Philadelphia Eagles experienced first-hand what a road game against a tough defense is like, as they were handily beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in rowdy CenturyLink Field, 24-15. That’s now the fifth-consecutive road loss for the Eagles, who were limited to just about four yards per play on Sunday.

Carson Wentz found it tough dissecting Seattle’s vaunted secondary, as he completed just 23 of his 45 passes for 218 yards along with a pair of touchdowns and interceptions. Wentz’s average of 4.84 yards per attempt on Sunday is a season-low, but we’re banking that the rookie QB will fare much better against the Packers’ porous defense next Monday night. His QB rating at home is about nine points better than on the road, and he’s also been sacked just four times at home compared to 15 away from Philly.

Wentz must excel in the passing game indeed, as Philadelphia’s backfield suffered two huge blows against the Seahawks. Running backs Ryan Mathews (knee) and Darren Sproles (ribs) had to exit Sunday’s game before halftime with their respective injuries, which certainly messes up the team’s good chemistry with its four-headed backfield committee.

Then again, perhaps simply being at home, where the Eagles are a perfect 4-0 this season (SU/ATS), is just the cure to their rough outing in Week 10. Philadelphia even has a top-five scoring defense at just 18.6 points allowed per game to the opposition, and we’ve already mentioned how much the Packers have struggled on the road this season.

Writer’s Prediction

The Eagles (-3.5) stay undefeated at home by narrowly beating the Packers, 24-20.
