How the PGA Majors Schedule Works
Masters Tournament
Date: second week of April
Venue: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, GA
The Masters is the first major tournament on the calendar and is the only major tournament to be held on only one particular golf course every year. It’s also where the famous green jacket is awarded to the winner of the tournament.
U.S. Open
Date: third week of June
Venue: various golf courses across the United States
The U.S. Open concludes on Father’s Day weekend, which adds a little more intrigue to the tournament’s festivities. The United States Golf Association (USGA) serves as the host for the second major of the year, and they are the ones who decide on which particular golf course in America this major will take place yearly.
The Open Championship/British Open
Date: third week of July
Venue: various golf courses across the United Kingdom
The Open Championship, often referred to as the British Open, is the only major tournament not played on American soil. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (The R&A) decide as for where the tournament will be held. 14 different links-style courses in the UK have hosted The Open in previous years, but now only 10 courses are taken into consideration as possible venues for the event.
PGA Championship
Date: third week of August
Venue: various golf courses across the United States
The final major tournament of the year is very much like the U.S. Open, wherein the hosting party – the Professional Golfers’ Association of America – decides on where the event will take place. The PGA Championship usually ends on the week before Labor Day weekend, but also gets re-scheduled to an earlier date than the third week of August (but never before the U.S. Open) in the event that the Summer Olympics are also on tap during a particular year.
