Betting on Hyeon Chung (+115)
Although not much buzz is made for his name, world no. 53 Hyeon Chung is progressing well. His 2017 should go down as the year he began being more of a regular in major tournaments, with tomorrow’s event-opener being his 22nd main draw match this year, by far the most in his pro career.
The 21-year-old is 24-11 overall on the season (10-6 on a hard court). He has won 12 of his last 17, which is across five tourneys, and it’s a stretch that saw him advance to the fourth round twice, one (Barcelona Open) wherein he gave eventual champion Rafael Nadal a good challenge.
Chung is 1-0 against Kyle Edmund. He got a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory in their meeting two years ago at the Burnie Challenger, where also saved 83 percent of the break points.
Betting on Kyle Edmund (-145)
Kyle Edmund is a couple of spots higher than Chung (45), but unlike Chung, his 2017 isn’t something to get excited about. The 19-20 win-loss card on the year is currently the worst of his career.
The performance at the Atlanta Open, where he reached the semifinals before getting bounced, could be a nice confidence-builder, as he earned straight set wins over Jack Sock and Marcos Baghdatis. However, note that he has only won four of his last nine, and he got convincingly defeated by Chung in their previous encounter.
Edmund is only 21-26 all-time on the ATP hard courts, and he is yet to win a title in any surface.
Writer’s Prediction
It’ll be a fun back-and-forth, with Chung (+115) coming out on top in four sets.
