Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+9)
What in the world is happening to the Jaguars? Jacksonville crashed to its second consecutive defeat with a humbling 36-22 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Thursday. They simply had no answer for Marcus Mariota who threw for 270 yards and a pair of touchdowns. With the loss, the Jaguars are now 2.5 games behind the division-leading Houston Texans in the AFC South standings.
It won’t get any easier for them this coming weekend as standing in their way are the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are eighth in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 19.6 points per game this season. The onus then is on quarterback Blake Bortles to step up his game this coming Sunday. He threw three touchdown passes and went 33 of 54 for 337 yards against the Titans, but much of his production came with the game out of reach.
It isn’t just Bortles who’s struggling right now but the entire Jaguars offense. They are 31st in the NFL in rushing, last in third-down conversions, 26th in total offense and 13th in pass offense this season. The pressure is on new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to turn things around against a Kansas City defense that’s allowing just 357.9 total yards per game this season.
The Jaguars are 2-8 SU and 4-5-1 ATS in their last 10 road games. They are pegged at +25,000 to win the AFC Championship this season.
Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-9)
No Alex Smith? No problem! The Chiefs bucked the absence of their franchise quarterback as they beat the Indianapolis Colts, 30-14, in a thrilling showdown at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday. Nick Foles stepped up big time in Smith’s absence, completing 16 of 22 passes for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Also doing their part in this critical victory were Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. They combined for 199 receiving yards and two scores in the win against the Colts.
The Chiefs will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the reeling Jacksonville Jaguars this coming Sunday. For Kansas City to record its fourth successive victory, it needs to continue its excellent play on the offensive end. The Chiefs are averaging 27.7 points during their current three-game winning run. They will be licking their chops at the prospect of facing a Jacksonville side that has struggled mightily on the defensive end this year. The Jaguars are sixth-worst in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing a whopping 28 points per game this season.
One major concern for head coach Andy Reid heading into this weekend clash is the Chiefs’ growing injury crisis. They finished their game against the Colts with Charcandrick West as their only healthy running back. The good news for Reid is that Alex Smith is now available for the Chiefs’ Week 9 showdown with the Jaguars. In a strange twist, the Chiefs are now saying that Smith didn’t suffer a concussion against Indianapolis and that he will be the team’s starter against Jacksonville this coming Sunday.
The Chiefs are 9-1 SU and 4-6 ATS in their last 10 home games. They are pegged at +750 to win the AFC Championship this season.
