Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks (18-5)
On paper, the Jayhawks are one of the best teams in the nation. They still are, but they are also prone to losing to teams the are not supposed to lose. Take for example their 84-79 loss as 11.5-point underdogs at home on Saturday against Oklahoma State. Kansas was badly beaten on the boards in that game with the Cowboys plucking down 41 rebound as against the Jayhawks’ 28. Bill Self’s boys were also a bit lazy defending against three with Oklahoma sending home 12 three-pointers on 27 attempts. Kansas’ defense is solid for most of the season, but the Jayhawks can’t afford to relax against Baylor, who is scoring 76.3 points per game. They did a good job in that area on Jan. 20, when Kansas beat the Bears in Waco, 70-67, holding Baylor to only 40 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc.
The Jayhawks are 11-0 SU and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings with Baylor.
Betting on the Baylor Bears (13-10)
Kansas is always going to be a tough test, but the Jayhawks are not unbeatable. Let it’s loss to Oklahoma State be Exhibit A for that statement. For the Bears to beat Kansas, they will need their bench to step up again big time. Their second-stringers kept them afloat in the previous meeting with Kansas, as Baylor’s bench outscored Kansas relievers, 20-5. Nuni Omot came off the bench in that game and chipped in 20 points. Manu Lecomte, meanwhile, leads the Bears in scoring with 16.7 points per game. He only had in the Kansas game, though, shooting just 3-for-12 from the floor. Perhaps a home game would translate to a much better game from the senior guard, who recently dropped 29 points, albeit in a close 98-96 road loss to No. 12 Oklahoma State on Jan. 30. Baylor knows a thing or two in defense also, as it limits opponents to only 69.5 points. The Bears have to cut down on their turnovers, however, as they had 16 against Kansas before. Baylor is 3-1 ATS in its last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction:
Kansas wins, 77-72.
