Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks (+40)

In seven games thus far this season, only once did the Kansas Jayhawks emerge on the winning side—a 55-6 victory over Rhode Island in the first week. Other than that, head coach David Beaty and his troops have steadily lost six games in a row, a streak that’s bound to extend to seven at the hands of the Sooners this weekend.

Well, there’s a chance—no matter how slim it is—that the upset-minded Jayhawks can stop the bleeding or at least put up a fight. They did show some promise, particularly on defense, in the one-point loss to TCU a couple of weeks ago. But offensively, Kansas just doesn’t have the weapons to match up to No. 16 Oklahoma.

Also, the quarterback situation remains sketchy for the Jayhawks. Quarterback Ryan Willis has been prone to errors, thus forcing Beaty to switch Montell Cozart behind center in the game versus Oklahoma State. The junior signal-caller threw for 250 yards and one touchdown, but had two interceptions. He might be able to do a better job in locating his top receivers—Steven Sims Jr. and LaQuvionte Gonzalez—versus a shaky Sooners defense that’s giving away 354.6 passing yards per contest.

Kansas is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall.

Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners (-40)

The Oklahoma Sooners have scored their way to a 5-2 record this season, good for the top spot in the Big 12.  They’re averaging almost 600 yards per game and are posting nearly 40 points per contest.

Baker Mayfield has turned into a potential candidate to win this year’s Heisman Trophy, throwing already for 2,348 yards and 23 touchdowns, almost half of which—11 to be exact—came in the previous two games, across seven games. Mayfield should keep dominating as long as his main receiver Dede Westbrook, who currently leads the team in receiving yards (930) along with 10 scores, is there to consistently catch his passes downfield.

Defense, however, is the ultimate source of Oklahoma’s vulnerability and its shootout victory over Texas Tech last week can prove that. Yes, the Sooners won there, but they gave up 59 points to the Red Raiders before bagging home their fourth-straight win.

Oklahoma, which is priced at +4,000 to become national champs this season, is 2-3 ATS in its last five games.
