After leading Team Japan to the title at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, it’s back to Major League Baseball business for Shohei Ohtani, who gets the ball for the Angels on Opening Day. Ohtani went 15-9 with a 2.33 ERA in 28 starts in 2022, while also holding opponents to just .203. In four starts against the A’s that season, Ohtani went 2-2 with just three earned runs on four hits across 24.2 innings. Of course, the Angels still have another stud in Mike Trout, who hit 40 home runs in 2022 while also batting .283.
The Angels are 5-1 in their last six Game 1s.
Los Angeles is also 7-3 in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Oakland Athletics (+1.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The A’s finished last in the AL West in 2022 with just a 60-102 record. There’s a long way to go for Oakland to become a respectable team on the field again, but they are at least hoping that they kick off the 2023 MLB season on a positive note, with Kyle Muller getting the call to start. Muller could be the surprise package for Oakland, as he’s the only rookie starting on Opening Day across the majors. He has a career 3.18 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in the minors. One of the newcomers to watch out for Oakland is infielder Aledmys Díaz, who won a ring with the Houston Astros in 2022. He has career slashes of .266/.320/.443 in seven years in the majors to go with 74 total home runs.
The A’s are 4-0 in their last four games overall. They are also 4-0 in their last four games against teams from the AL West.
Writer’s Prediction
The Angels win, 4-2.
