Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (4-4)
Inconsistencies at the plate have led to an underwhelming 4-4 start for the Dodgers. During wins, they’re averaging close to 10 runs per game, while being limited to less than two runs in setbacks—something we saw in the 3-2 loss in Monday night’s series opener with Chicago.
The LA offense managed just six hits, but got a 2-for-5 effort from second baseman and leadoff hitter Logan Forsythe, who went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI during the previous contest. He needs to stay hot and swing in some runs in this second game at Wrigley Field.
Receiving the nod for the Dodgers is Brandon McCarthy (1-0, 3.00 ERA). He was solid in his season debut versus the Padres, tossing six innings of two-run ball with four strike outs. McCarthy is 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA in three career games (two starts) versus the Cubs.
Los Angeles is a +400 favorite to win the National League pennant.
Betting on the Chicago Cubs (5-2)
Anthony Rizzo made sure his team came out as winners on a jubilant Monday night, when the Cubs hoisted their World Championship banner for the first time ever at Wrigley Field. He smashed in the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chicago the 3-2 win against the Dodgers.
That, however, was just his first RBI of the season, as the first baseman is still trying to find his form. Rizzo is batting .172 in his first eight games and remains dinger-less.
Kris Bryant, the reigning National League MVP, is also looking for his first long bomb. Despite that, he’s been a delight to watch after an ugly start to the season. Prior to going 1-for-16 at the plate in the first four games, Bryant is 7-for-14 with three doubles and four RBIs in his last three outings.
John Lackey, who’s set to go on the mound for the Cubs tonight, can look forward to some run support from Bryant and, hopefully, from Rizzo too. In any case, the 38-year-old veteran should be able to do a fine job in limiting opposing runs. Lackey carries a 6-3 record with a 1.75 ERA across 12 career games (11 starts) versus the Dodgers.
