Betting on the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (+46.5)
Matt Viator’s first game as head coach of Louisiana-Monroe was a success, as the Warhawks upended Southern last Saturday, 38-21. It was a dominant showing for the Warhawks, who also managed to cover their 14-point spread as favorites.Up ahead for the Warhawks, however, is a testy matchup with a rebound-seeking Oklahoma. The Warhawks leaned on Garrett Smith in the Southern game, as the quarterback completed 20 of 33 passes for 208 yards though he did have two interceptions. The Warhawks could get by with that kind of shaky performance from Smith opposite Southern but they couldn’t afford to have another against a much stronger opponent this Saturday.
Smith, however, is a dual-threat quarterback who could resort to his legs for extra yardages any time the Sooners’ defense goes lax. Smith rushed for 359 yards last season. He’s already on pace to surpass that after gaining 150 rushing yards to go with a rushing score against Southern.
Stopping Baker Mayfield and the Sooners’ offense, meanwhile, should be a bigger task for the Warhawks, who gave up a dizzying 36.5 points per game in 2015.
Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners (-46.5)
The road back to the College Football Playoff just got a lot tougher for the Sooners following a shock 33-23 defeat at the hands of Houston last Saturday. At least, Oklahoma will get a very light opponent up next in the form of the Warhawks, as the Sooners play their first game of the season in Norman.
The Sooners, who are 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS in their last six home games, should have their way against a Warhawks team that offers so little to the table for people to believe that they’d beat an Oklahoma team in Norman fully motivated to bounce back.
As for the tangibles, expect the pair of Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine to blast through Louisiana-Monroe’s defense that gave up 208.0 rushing yards per game in 2015 and one that lost a number of key players in the offseason. Mixon and Perine combined for only 71 rushing yards against Houston with the former scoring a touchdown.
The air attack will be led by Baker Mayfield, who passed for 323 yards on 24 of 33 completions with two touchdowns in the loss to the Cougars. There is experience in the Warhawks’ secondary but that shouldn’t faze a power conference team like the Sooners. Mayfield should have a field day this coming Saturday.
