Betting Preview for the Michael Chiesa vs Vicente Luque Welterweight Bout at UFC 265 on August 7, 2021
Where: Toyota Center (Houston), Houston, TX
When: Saturday, August 7, 2021
Odds: Michael Chiesa (-105) vs. Vicente Luque (-125)
TV Broadcast: UFC Fight Pass
Betting on Michael Chiesa (-105)
MMA Record: 18-4-0
Chiesa has been having success in the welterweight division since he made the move up to that class nearly three years ago. He has won all of his past four fights, all of which are against quality fighters. After beating Carlos Condit via submission in December 2018, he scored three consecutive unanimous decisions against Diego Sanchez, Rafael Dos Anjos, and Neil Magny. He’s also got wins against the likes of Al Iaquinta, Jim Miller, and Beneil Darius. The 33-year-old Chiesa is an experienced fighter who’s not going to be intimidated by anyone inside the Octagon, which is a cliche thing to say, but true nonetheless, considering the opponents he’s faced in the past. Don’t expect Chiesa to come into Saturday’s fight looking to score a knockout, as he’s not won a bout through that. However, he has an 11-3 submission record and a 3.6 takedown average per 15 minutes. (Luque only has 0.66/15 minutes.)
Betting on Vicente Luque (-125)
MMA Record: 20-7-1
Chiesa has already gone on record that he’s aware Luque is a dangerous fighter. In fact, he said that The Silent Assassin is “hands down is the most dangerous guy” he’s been “matched up with.” Indeed. Luque means business. The Brazilian has been undefeated in his last three fights, each of which did not go the distance. He stopped Niko Price via punches in May 2020 then earned Performance of the Night honors by scoring a knockout win over Randy Brown in August 2020. He then submitted Tyron Woodley via D’Arce Choke. Although, as mentioned, Lucie is only averaging below 1.0 takedowns per 15 minutes, he has the same submission average per the same duration as Chiesa (0.9). Plus he has a 7-2 submission record. Luque is also dangerous standing up,. He has 11 knockout victories against zero KO losses. He is averaging 5.74 significant strikes landed per minute, multiple folds better than Chiesa’s 1.89 average.
Writer’s Prediction
Luque wins via knockout.
