Pitching Edge – Pittsburgh Pirates (-175)
Francisco Liriano’s numbers (5-9, 5.11 ERA) are hard to digest this season. But he’s been on the rise lately, having allowed no more than three runs in each of his three previous starts. That stretch includes a brilliant showing against the Cubs on July 8, during which he registered five innings of one-run ball to help the Pirates garner the 8-4 victory. Liriano, who has allowed an MLB-high of 62 walks, is also 3-4 with a 3.67 ERA in nine starts at PNC Park this year. The Bucs are 1-4 SU in their past five games with Liriano starting. They are also priced at +1,200 to win the NL Central division crown this year.
Batting Edge – Pittsburgh Pirates (-175)
In case that Francisco Liriano struggles on the mound later this evening, the Pirates can still save their butts with some timely production at the plate. They are averaging 4.61 runs per game on the year, which is among the best in the majors right now.
A testament to that success is the tandem of Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen. The former currently leads the team in batting (.314) and hits (105), while McCutchen has done his part to knock some balls out of the park with 14 homers. He’s also batting .280 lifetime against the Brewers.
Writer’s Prediction: Bucs (-175) win it, 5-3.
