Martin Truex has momentum going into this weekend’s race in Charlotte. The 2016 Coca-Cola 600 champ has just won in Kansas earlier this month, which was his second top finish of the year.
Charlotte Motor Speedway has been a favorite by Truex, as evidenced by the fact that he has finished inside the top five in three of four races there since February of 2015. And considering the manner of how he laid his competitors to waste last year, Truex truly deserves the favorite label in this event. Truex set a new record at the track in the 2016 Coca-Cola 600, leading the race for 392 laps (!) on his way to a victory and a perfect driver rating of 150.0.
Truex isn’t the only driver with known dominance in Charlotte. There’s also Jimmie Johnson, who has eight wins at the track in his career—the most by a driver in Charlotte ever. In addition, Johnson has 15 top 5’s, 19 top 10’s, and 23 top 20’s in Charlotte overall.
Sleeper: Clint Bowyer
It’s been a while since Clint Bowyer last had a solid finish in Charlotte, having failed to get inside the top 10 since winning the Bank of America 500 there in 2012. That’s an eight-race stretch in which he had three top-20 finishes, the best being an 11th-place finish in 2015. Bowyer could be due for another success in Charlotte, so it’s reasonable to lay some money on the 37-year-old.
Long Shot: Danica Patrick
Don’t count out a miracle happening in Charlotte—like Danica Patrick winning the race. While she hasn’t had a top 10 in any of her previous 20 races, her best performance during that stretch was her 11th-place finish in the 2016 Bank of America 500 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
