Betting on the New York Mets
It’s official: The New York Mets are back in the playoffs. The defending National League champions clinched homefield for the NL Wild Card Game with a 5-3 win over the Phillies yesterday. The Mets have the Phillies to thank for their help in the stretch run. New York has gone 5-1 over the last two weeks against its NL East rivals.
Rookie Gabriel Ynoa is now set to start the Mets’ regular season finale in place of Noah Syndergaard, whose next start is now the Wild Card Game. The righty has made just two starts this season, with seven bullpen appearances.
One of those two starts came against the Phillies on Sept. 23, which did not go too well for him. He lasted just two innings, giving up two runs on five hits. The Mets offense bailed him out that time, as they rolled to a 10-5 win. However, that might not be the case this time around as manager Terry Collins likely rests some – if not all – of his stars in preparation for the Wild Card Game.
Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies
Another disappointing season is set to conclude for the Phightin’ Phils, who have seemingly been in offseason mode for the last couple of weeks now. They’re currently on a six-game losing skid and are 1-8 in their last nine games.
Jerad Eickhoff will have one last chance to end the skid and salvage some semblance of pride. The second-year starter has been one of the rare bright spots for the team this year, even though his 11-14 record and 3.72 ERA don’t look too impressive.
Eickhoff is 0-2 in three starts against the Mets this season, although two of those starts were in the first couple weeks of the season. His 3.00 ERA is also pretty respectable.
Apart from a poor start against Pittsburgh, Eickhoff has had a solid final month of the season. He’s gone at least six innings in four of his five starts, and the one start where he didn’t go at least six was due to a rain delay. He’s got a 2.73 ERA in September, and will likely face an understrength Mets lineup.
Writer’s Prediction
The Phillies finally snap their losing skid as they beat the Mets, 5-3.
