Betting on the New York Mets (-155)
With a nice hair and an even nicer pitching game, righty Robert Gsellman steps into the mound for the Mets later tonight hunting for his fourth win of the season.
Once again, Gsellman will be facing the same Phillies team that he mowed down in his last outing, throwing seven scoreless frames and allowing just three hits while recording eight K’s in a soul-crushing 17-0 win last Sunday. For those keeping count, that was the second time in three starts that Gsellman blanked the other team.
Gsellman will be staring down again Phillies’ lackluster offense that is ranked second worst in the majors as of this writing in batting average since the start of the second half.
Having been spoiled too by the Mets’ offense in his previous start against Philadelphia, Gsellman will be counting on the likes of Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson to provide ample run support. Bruce is 7-for-16 to go with three home runs over his last five games. As for Granderson, the outfielder is 8-for-16 with six runs in his last four outings.
Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies (+140)
The Phillies may be in a rut but Alec Asher appears to have the stuff to help stop his club’s bleeding.
Asher has been undefeated in four starts this season, going 2-0 with a floor-scraping 1.66 ERA. Both his wins came on the road, however, so tonight’s showdown against the Mets presents his last chance this year to get a W at Citizens Bank Park.
Asher was dealing great in his previous start, holding the Mets scoreless for five innings in a 10-8 victory last Saturday.
A shaky bullpen and a poor run support, however, are bug hurdles for the Phillies. Philadelphia has the majors worst bullpen ERA this September with an 8.15 mark.
Showing they’re bad in other areas too, the Phillies supply their pitchers with only 3.85 runs per nine innings, fewest in the MLB. That said, Odubel Herrera and Aaron Alther could sting at the plate.
Herrera is 8-for-25 in his last six games. Alther is 4-for-10 in his last three outings.
