Pitching Edge – New York Yankees (+120)
Both Masahiro Tanaka and Lance McCullers have been pitching well this month, but we have to give the slight edge to the former. Tanaka is 2-0 with a 1.48 ERA in four starts this month, while McCullers is 2-2 with a 2.22 ERA in his last four outings. Tanaka was last seen on the mound during a 3-2 win over San Francisco on July 22, wherein he tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just four hits with as many strikeouts. McCullers, on the other hand, has surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits in his last 13.1 innings on the mound, spanning two starts. The Yankees have traded Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs so Andrew Miller is likely the team’s closer moving forward. Miller is among the most effective pitchers in the league today, though Houston has the better bullpen numbers than New York thus far this year. Houston’s relievers are third in the majors with a 3.06 ERA, while the Yankees are eighth with 3.47 ERA.
Batting Edge – Houston Astros (-130)
Houston has badder bats than New York. The Astros will draw from a more powerful lineup, one that carries a .423 slugging percentage. The Yankees, meanwhile, are last in the American League with a pathetic .394 SLG. That being said, the Yankees are hitting slightly better this month with a .249 BA, as compared to Houston’s .247. Tanaka will have to watch out for Carlos Correa, who is 3-for-6 with a pair of homers in his career against the Japanese hurler.
Writer’s Prediction: Houston (-130) wins, 3-2
