FAVORITES
Sungjae Im (+1400)
Im will look to get his second win in this tournament after failing to defend his title in 2021. Im, who won the 2020 edition of The Honda Classic, is having a solid start to the 2021-22 PGA TOUR campaign, as he has made the cut in all but one of the nine tournaments he’s participated thus far. He also has four top 10s, including a win in the Shriners Children’s Open last October.
Daniel Berger (+1400)
Berger missed the cut in the WM Phoenix Open and did not play in the Genesis Invitational, but he could be ready to make loud noises when he returns to action this week at PGA National Champion Course. Berger has a pretty good resume at PGA National, having gone 4 of 6 there with a couple of top 5s, including a runner-up finish in the 2015 Honda Classic. The last time he played there, he shot 3-under 277 to finish fourth in the 2020 Honda Classic.
Joaquin Niemann (+1800)
The 23-year-old Chileanis coming off a sensational win in the 2022 Genesis Invitational, where he led the tournament from start to finish, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat in over five decades. Niemann definitely deserves much attention following that victory and sometimes, you just have to ride the hot hand. Niemann has three top 10s this season and is 6 of 8 overall.
HIGH-VALUE SLEEPERS
Mito Pereira (+4000)
Another Chilean in Pereira might be inspired by Niemann’s win last week. He also did well in The Genesis Invitational, finishing with a T15 to snap a streak of two missed cuts. Overall this season, Pereira is 8 of 11 with three top 25s and a top 10 (third in the Fortinet Championship).
Aaron Wise (+5500)
Sure, Wise is only 1 of 3 this season, but things could look up soon for the 25-year-old pro, as he seems to like playing at the PGA National, where he is a perfect 3 of 3. He has yet to crack the top 10 there, but last year, he finished 13th overall, his best showing in that venue, so far in his young career.
LONG SHOTS
Bill Haas (odds)
Haas is only 6 of 12 this season and has missed the cut in three of his last five starts. He did have a 13th-place performance at PGA National, though, during the 2007 Honda Classic, so that’s at least something to build a little trust on the 39-year-old Charlotte native.
Brandon Wu (odds)
It’s been a tough season for Wu, who’s only managed to make the cut just once in nine starts. He is 0 of 5 in his past five starts and was also cut in his only appearance (2021) so far at the PGA National.
Writer’s Prediction
Daniel Berger wins the 2022 Honda Classic.
